I had no problems so far
I too have a Sony RDR-VX500 VCR/DVD Recorder and the formating only took 5-7 min. Another reviewer said that the formatting took over 40 min. This is not normal. Either a disc is defective or the recorder has malfunctioned. I had no problems so far.
There's one thing that customers need to be aware of: That is the difference between DVD-RW and DVD+RW discs. I didn't think there was a difference so I purchased a package of DVD-RW discs at Wal-mart. I learned the hard way that there is a difference. The DVD recorder will not create a menu on the DVD-RW discs. You can still create titles-but if you are playing the disc on a regular DVD player(I also have a Sony 5 disc DVD player)then playing the DVD-RW Disc is nearly impossiable. So when buying RW discs or R discs-Make sure you see the+sign. Either the DVD+R or the DVD+RW. It's the differnce between a menu or no menu. Just be careful.

Sony dvc premium mini dv 60
Sony put so many different labels on these blue covered tapes it's hard to know if you're dealing with the same item. I've been using a lot of these tapes and have had a lot of problems mostly in the VCR mode where the tape just hangs for a few seconds and starts again. I do my editing directly to a DVD recorder and this is very annoying because these stops are transferred to the final product. Sometines the camera stops working and tells me to reinsert the tape. This happens with no other tapes.

Works great with a PROPER burnerI have a 16x NEC-3540a. Burns fine at 16x. They should be reliable also considering the 2 year old 4x Memorex DVDRs I have still work perfectly. Though those are 4x but I'll see. For those with problems upgrade... to a good burner (Plextor NEC etc.) Burners are too cheap now to own anything below a 16x.

Quality Tapes at An Affordable PriceI use these Mini DV Tapes for my Canon Vixia HV30 camera. I don't re-use the cassettes so I wind up going through a lot of tape and so I'm always looking for a good price. This set was it as buying in the store would have cost a whole lot more.

awesome dealI see a lot of negative reviews here but I've been using these discs for a couple months now with my PowerBook G4's Superdrive and I've had no problems at least none that I would attribute to the discs themselves. One review laments Toast Titanium 7 which in my experience is a very finnicky buggy program. I too had a number of failed burns with that program but I was able to remedy the situation by saving my dvd projects as disc images and then burning them later with disc utility after I had a chance to mount them and check them out. For the price I payed for these discs if I remember right almost half the price of a 25 pack from other companies for a 50 pack from memorex I am very very pleased. If you're looking to play around with dvd burning and I guarantee you you will make a few mistakes and have to throw away a few discs before you get it right this is the best deal you'll find anywhere.

Discs are unusable
I have burned 6 DVDs from this batch and *all* of them have a significant amount of errors (even with different speeds). None of the burned DVDs can be played in a regular DVD player without errors hickups etc.
Earlier I used verbatim DVDs with the same burner and with those other batches I never had errors.
I use KProbe to check the quality of the burn and with this batch it's always awful. PI is consistently over 277 (which makes the disc useless).
UPDATE 3/17/2009: I forgot to mention that quickly after the sale I notified the seller and asked them how to return the disks. They responded quickly but I was too busy to actually send the disks back. They refunded my money nevertheless. Excellent service!
